Chapter 12 - 1715 AD

War against Germany has been declared. I have a sizable force ready to march into Rhineland but no artillery at all.
It is possible to breach the walls without it but it's very, very risky. And usually not too smart to attempt. But I know
that in this case Germany has weak units in Rhineland and this province isn't well defended. General Yeekim marches forward!
The game questions this mad king's sanity.
Image

The last of my forces are moved into position.
Image

And deployed.
Image

I rush every unit to the wall. I want to get the foot soldiers as close as I can since they are the only ones that
can break through the wall without any artillery. The cavalry can only duck!
Image

A hole is opened! Now I can rush everyone into the fort!
Image

Victory! Rhineland is now a province of England.
Image

I send a spy into the German capitol. I must move forward. In the meantime I build as many regiments as
I can and send them to reinforce General Yeekim.
Image

The reinforcements will include horse artillery for those pesky fort walls.
Image

My spy reports back with estimates of enemy strength.
Image

The German capitol is mine! The horse artillery wasn't as helpful as I had hoped. Both units ran off after
only a few good rounds into the fort.
Image

After the Germans lose Hamburg some of their soldiers see the error of their ways and I get a free regiment!
Image

Another Old World province is mine! Noticed that the map has been changing will I've been on the move.
The other major powers are fighting amongst themselves. So far no big Old World Wars yet.
Image

General Yeekims army rests in Hamburg. They must recover from their last two battles before marching on.
Image

And this being Christmas Eve, all hostilities were halted and a brief truce breaks out among the English and German forces.
Image

Happy Holidays!

Chapter 13 - 1722 AD
Now that March is here and winter is gone the troops are able to move again.
Our spy is still in Brunswick trying to gather information on the enemy's forces there. Note that our forces sit in Hamburg awaiting orders to march forward.
Image

It's been a while so I check the Transport screen. I'm reminded that I really need to build up my navy!
Image

Without a good source of tin I'm still forced to buy what I can on the world market.
Fortunately Italy sells me what it can.
Image

Meanwhile the wars continue in the New World. France and Spain are really going at it.
Image

Bad news arrives. I've lost contact with my spy in Germany. Not only that but some of
my workers are whining about not enough luxuries to keep them happy. Indeed!
Image
-
Image

On the scientific front I"m told I can build larger merchant ships now. Good news! I've just
added another Galleon to my fleet but I need many more ships!
Image

Holland takes Zurich from Switzerland.
Image

I've added two more light infantry units to my army and sent them to Hamburg. I need to take
the last province from Germany. Maybe after I add two more units.
Image

After adding the two infantry units I'm informed that I have enough units to
justify another General! So in keeping with the naming method, meet General PrinceScamp!
General PrinceScamp is immediately sent to the New World to assume command of all
forces there. The first thing he notes is the lack of enough forces to protect all of our
holdings should something bad happen there.
Image

Finally, a parting shot of jolly old England. Hmm, I also need to think about increasing the size of
some of those forts...

Chapter 14 - 1735 AD
There's still no shortage of Great Powers wanting to by my ally. The number of "grey" provinces left on the map is rapidly
getting smaller. I still don't want to sign any treaties with anyone just yet.
Image

As mentioned many, many times my navy is in need of upgrading. I can build galleons now and
I've got to do that soon.
Image

Bad news arrives! Holland has declared war against Ireland. Holland is kind of like me in that they
only have a few holdings in the New World. But they defiantly have a taste for Old World provinces.
Image

Holland successfully invades Ireland.
Image

I've added three more musketeers (no jokes!) to my forces outside of Brunswick. I now order 12 units
under the command of General Yeekim to march in. I've also noticed that I'm running a deficit on meat.
My stores are large enough to support it but I need to get more sources soon.
Image

General Yeekim moves in. Most of my troops do a fine job of pushing back the enemy. Even both of my
artillery units managed to stay in the fight this time.
Image

Victory! Germany is no more! England is now it's own island.
Image

Not only did I take the last German province, Holland grabbed another Irish one.
Image

I've added two more galleons to my navy. Still not enough...
Image

A look at the world as it stands now. I suspect that an Old World War is brewing.
With the last of the provinces being claimed the Great Powers will being turning on
each other.
Image

That's it for now. I think as far as this being a tutorial type AAR I've reached the point
where I'm going to start playing more turns between updates. That way I can finish this
AAR a little sooner. I've started my Galactic Civilization II AAR so I need the extra time anyway.
Let me know if there's any objections to speeding this AAR up. :running:

Chapter 15 - 1738 AD
Immediately after starting this next chapter I'm greeted with ominous news.
Could this be the beginning of all out war in the Old World?
Image

So far the battles continue to occur in the New World.
Image

But then it happens. WAR! Portugal has decided to declare war on me.
I hope their focus is on my New World holdings since, other than General Yeekim's
forces, my Old World military is still lacking. I think General Princescamp has
enough forces in the New World to hold.
Image

Ouch. This is not good news. Portugal's navy is surrounding England. My hopes
for a New World conflict is fading fast.
Image

Can someone get me an adviser from Kwakiutl so I know what to expect?
Image

Fortunately I have access to some great intelligence information concerning
the makeup of Portugal's fleet.
Image

You can see here how serious the situation has become. Portugal is blockading
five provinces.
Image

It's time for some serious planning. Portugal is ranked as having the most
powerful military in the World. It's time to re-think the alliance thing. I need
some help here. Let's hope I haven't taken my isolationism too far.
Image

Holland is second in military power. And the aren't at war with anyone else.
The other powers are already fighting each other so an alliance with any one
of them would expand my own problems. Hmm, Holland my old friend!
Image

I offer an Alliance treaty to Holland.
Image

Portugal's blockade is working. :-(
Image

Very bad news. Holland has no interest in signing an Alliance treaty. Who
do they think they are? Me?
Image

Portugal must have intercepted that last diplomatic message to Holland.
They are invading three provinces in England! I really should have improved
my forts!
Image
Image

So there it is. Portugal is invading three of my home provinces. Holland has
refused my offer of an alliance. I can't really blame them. What to do now?
I could shotgun alliance offers to the other powers in hopes that someone will
take pity on me. Should I pull my forces out of the New World and bring them
home to help fend off Portugal? That would almost guarantee my loss of New
World holdings. I was hoping to speed this AAR up but not this way! All
suggestions are welcome!

Chapter 16 - 1745 AD

I'm recalling most of my New World troops back to England to help defend against the evil Portuguese. There's only a token force remaining in the New World now.
Image

I offer Portugal a chance to make peace before it's too late (for me!).
Image

News comes that Rhineland is under attack!
Image

There's only a couple of units in Rhineland and Portugal is driven back. I suspect they underestimated my forces there.
Image

The exact same thing happens in Devon.
Image

But sadly Hamburg was undefended and fell to the invaders.
Image

And I also lost Gazit in the New World.
Image

After receiving word of their military successes, Portugal declines my generous peace treaty offering.
Image

Now Brunswick falls.
Image

I've decided to move both armies into Hamburg in order to push back the invaders.
Image

In the New World I lose two more possessions.
Image
Image

Meanwhile, my attack on Hamburg meets disaster. And A LOT of artillery. My forces are decimated.
Image

Rhineland is under attack again! Deploy my forces? I still have forces there?!
Image

Another tiny victory!
Image

Using my only two large armies to attack Hamburg might have been a mistake.
Image

My last holding in the New World is under attack.
Image

And just like that all of my New World holdings are gone.
Image

But it doesn't stop there. Rhineland finally falls as well.
Image

England is now reduced to it's original 1502ad size.
Image

And with that I've decided to resign this game. My armies are almost non-existent. My navy is gone. I've had countless games of Imperialism II go this way. I still love Imperialism II and will keep playing it though. It's one of my all time favorite games. I hope you enjoyed this AAR and I hope it encourages you to try Imperialism II if you haven't. I think this is a decent tutorial AAR to help you get started. And watch out for Portugal!

Sheesh! That is HARSH. Rotten luck, that.

So what's next to continue on your chopping block? I'll definitely keep track of whatever it is (like your GalCiv run), your writing style is easy to keep up with along your games.

I plan to continue my GalCiv2 AAR. I just confirmed that I still have the save game file so all is okay.
